The World Bank has recently granted USD $25 million to Malawi to upgrade the country’s geological database of information that dates back to the 1950’s.  The long awaited geological remapping project will encompass grass roots exploration to produce new geological, geophysical and geochemical maps.

At a meeting in London (Wednesday, November 28th, 2012) officers from Britannia Mining met with His Excellency Bernard H Sande High Commissioner for Malawi to discuss the company’s work program in the Nthale region.

Chief Executive Officer Kenneth Roberts said,”we have made further advancements at our Nthale Iron Ore project and we are currently considering the recent geological observations from Bastillion Resources SA. Britannia Mining is working closely with the Government to expedite developing iron ore resources in Malawi.”

The mineral sector is expected to substantially contribute as one of the pillars of the Malawi Economic Recovery Plan (MERP) to support growth as championed by Her Excellency the President Mrs Joyce Banda. Also included in the plan are Energy, Transport, Infrastructure, Tourism and Agriculture.
